CAVES AND VILLAGES SURROUNDED BY CLIFFS

The « Caborne du Bœuf » (in Saint-Hymetière)

An impressive 20-metre high gateway leads into the 1st chamber of the cave (lit and with no entry restrictions). You will need caving equipment to access the remaining 176 metres of galleries.
Why this name ?  Caborne » means cave in local dialect. This cave gets its name from a stalagmitic dome in the shape of a beef paunch.
The path « caborne du bœuf » (1.5 km) starts from the church of de Saint-Hymetière.

Cave of La Balme d’Épy

A Balme is a cave which opens in the cliff face and the source of a stream.  Much of the 170-metre network is submerged. A Virgin and an altar are to be found in the cave, giving it the appearance of the cave at Lourdes.
